The compound microscope was first devised by a spectacle maker of Middleburg about 1590, but it is only within the last 100 years that it has undergone any important alterations. Professor Amici Ross, Abbe, Dr. Wollaston, and Sir David Brewster each made great discoveries and improvements, and to these and to Joseph Lister (father of the Great Lord Liser) belongs the honor of bringing the microscope to a state of high efficency. - There is a border around the image.
