When a beam of light passes through a glass prism it is broken into a band of colors called the "spectrum." Light from different substances will give different kinds of spectra, and the spectrascope is an instrument for studying and analysing the spectra or luminous bodies. The dark lines in the solar spectrum were first observed by Wollaston in 1802, and were mapped out by scientists in 1815. They number over 2000. - There is a border around the image.
